Recently I aquired a second Sunpak 120J. Some of you might be asking yourself, “what is this retro looking thingamabob?!”. The 120J is a parabolic flash that is a discontinued flash made by Sunpak. There are several advantages of this flash compared to your normal speedlight.
It is designed so the reflector can be taken off which allows the bare bulb to emit light at 360 degrees. The main reason I like them because at shorter range they are a little more powerful than most speedlights yet they still can run on 4 AA batteries. This is obviously and advantage if you do not want to lug around a studio strobe and a battery pack. These flashes can also be found used for about $175-$300.
For fun I mounted them on a dual flash bracket and decided to make a desktop wallpaper which I will share. In reality when I do use them as a dual flash I would be taking off the reflector and using it in a 60″ Softlighter. Hopefully I can take some samples and get them up here on the blog. Till there here are some flashy desktop wallpapers for you to enjoy….
